A Free Article by Thom Hartmann:“When Democracy Failed: The Warnings of History” |
Reviewers like We the PeopleWe the People is a deadly serious comic book that covers virtually all important issues facing Americans and the democracy under which we live. This is one of the most informative and authoritative socio-political analyses of our time. Its warnings and remedies should be taken to heart before the freedoms that we have taken for granted for so long shall be systematically stolen from us. You must read this book and urge others to read it. As a complete work seeking to communicate difficult facts and ideas in a dynamic and accessible way, We the People is a fabulous practical manifestation of sequential art’s potential. It only feels like a juvenile experience until you realize you just comprehended very mature and profound intricacies in thought and information with less than half the effort one would arguably need to comprehend such things if they were presented in another form. Pick up a copy — or ten — and give them to someone you know in junior high school, or a senior citizen, or a busy person who might appreciate an overview with cited sources that takes a surprisingly systemic look at our complex of problems and correspondingly sophisticated set of potential positive paths. The time they take — and the time they save with this entertaining and economical tour de force — may be reflected in the democracy we take back. This is brilliant!... It makes the convoluted ins and outs of politics understandable (our high schooler is gobbling it up right now), and somehow much more personal. If you are a social activist committed to good government and the constitutional rules set out in order to promote “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” or simply someone who has become aware of, and concerned about, the increasing political polarization of our country, then read We the People: A Call to Take Back America. Many BuzzFlash readers know Thom Hartmann as a liberal radio talk show host, but he really is a bit more than that. Hartmann is one of the last of the great humanist renaissance men. We highly recommend the graphic non-fiction book, “We the People: A Call to Take Back America.” It's a collaborative work that features Thom Hartmann's analysis of how we got into the current crisis of democracy that America faces — and his recipe for getting us out of this fix. We were a bit skeptical when his publisher called us about the book, even though we are big Hartmann fans. But once we read a review copy, we were completely won over. This is a great book to read as a sort of one-stop shopping piece on the “invasion of the democracy” snatchers. It's also great to give to someone who you are struggling to convince that the Bush Administration is a subversive enterprise undermining the very core of America. Not that Hartmann exclusively focuses on the Bush Cartel. He covers the whole right wing-corporate infrastructure that is undermining democracy. Hartmann is a bibliophile and erudite, but this illustrated work is completely accessible and engaging. Tom is learned, but he knows how to explain complicated sociopolitical issues to the average person, like the staff at BuzzFlash. Actually, we haven't read any other book that covers such sweeping historical, political and corporate collusion issues in such succinct, accessible terms. And it's like reading a comic book, literally. You can't beat that, can you?
